For all of you who have begun decorating, painting, and maybe even purchased furniture and other items and realize you chose the wrong colors and items, the first step is for you to decipher what needs to be changed and what can be changed.

1. The first issue to overcome is the thought that “you don’t know
what to do.” You can learn what to do, but panic and guilt do not
get to be part of the equation.

2. Now that you are not afraid of any decorating mistakes you made,
beginning to assess what needs to be changed becomes easier.
    A. Is the furniture in the wrong locations? Does the room have a
welcoming feel or does the placement of the furniture prohibit easy
access and entrance into the room?
    B. Is the wall color too dark? Too light? Too cool?
Or is the wall color off a shade or two?
    C. Are there too many colors in the room?
    D. Are there too many different accessories in the room (i.e. those with
a Victorian feel, Asian feel, Tuscan feel, and a contemporary feel)?
It is not wrong to mix things up, but too many different styles may
cause the room to feel unsettled.
    E. Do the window treatments coincide with the décor?
    F. Are you missing any elements?

3. Begin eliminating the problems using the least expensive solutions first.
For example, it is cheaper and easier to move the furniture than it is
to repaint the room. It is easier and cheaper to remove some accessories
that are the wrong style and color than it is to buy a new sofa.

Once the problem is determined, you are well on your way to a successful decorating project and a beautiful home. Oh, and by the way, if it makes you feel any better, I have had to repaint and rearrange too. We cannot be afraid of making mistakes. We will never achieve a beautiful home if we all have to be perfect. Perfection is not a qualification for home beautification projects. Trouble-shooting is worth the effort!
