Planning for Successful Accessorizing

Have you ever gone shopping and bought “impulse” items for your home? You know what I am talking about; the really cool candlestick holder that you still don’t know where to put (you still haven’t purchased the candle to go with it!).  Or, how about that extremely unusual vase that you purchased last month because it was on sale (the one that doesn’t really go in any room in your house)?

Sometimes, buying something that catches our eye (especially if it’s at the right price) is a great idea.  But most of the time, we waste money when we don’t have a plan.

For instance, if you need a picture for over your fireplace, have you measured the size you need?  Have you thought about what color the frame should be or the style and colors within the picture itself? Answering these questions before you go shopping will save you time and money.

Let’s say you would like to re-accessorize your coffee table.  Is it small in size? Then buying large items may be disproportionate for it and visa versa. Do you want items that are tall or will it be too hard to have a conversation with a large floral arrangement between you and your guests. How is your furniture arranged around the coffee table? Having the dimensions of the table and some idea of what you like will help you to choose items correctly the first time.  Even having a picture from a magazine with you, while you shop, may help you to choose similar items and achieve the look you want.

Planning is ignored many times because people don’t know what they want. They hope they will find the “right” accessories by going in and out of stores.  Sometimes this happens, but most of the time the end result of such a shopping trip is a cluster of accessories that don’t really go together.  At that point, people come to the conclusion that they don’t know how to accessorize.

Planning stops this scenario. Planning gives you a better chance of success.

Happy Planning! ~ Pam
