Here are just a few ideas if fun things you can do with family, friends or for others. Just look at the dates above. Most kind or fun things you can do with or for others are pretty simple, but they go a long way.

August is Romance Awareness Month. Think of some romantic things you can do with your spouse. Make it a goal to do something as many days as possible, no matter how big or small it may seem. You may want to babysit for someone else so they can have a romantic evening.

It is also Family Fun Month. Go out of your way to do some fun things with your family. Perhaps you can have each member take a day to think of something fun for everyone to do together. Remember having fun does not have to be expensive. The simplest things, like playing a game or cards, coloring, or going for a walk can be fun. Doing something together for someone else can be fun too.

August 3 grab a watermelon, cut it up in small pieces and feast on it. Get a seeded watermelon and have a seed spitting contest. Have a prize for the person who can spit it the farthest.

It’s National Golf Month. Buy your favorite golfer some new golf balls or go to a golf course and give away some balls.

Have an Elvis Party since the second week of August is Elvis week. Just for fun have an Elvis impersonating contest with family or friends after dinner, even if you do not have a party.

Make s’mores with your family on August 10.

Have BBQ and serve filet mignon on August 14 or send someone some filets. Also, if you are right-handed, try to do things with your left hand today, since it is left-handers

Since WWII ended on August 14, 1945 go to a local nursing home or retirement center and visit or do something special for men that served during the war.

August 18 watch The Wizard of Oz with some friends, family or neighbors to mark its premiere in 1939.

August 21 is Senior Citizen Day. Do something nice for a senior. Go to a nursing home. Visit your grandparents or other elderly people you know. Send flowers. Call. Let them know how special they are and how much value they give.

Make banana splits or go out for some on August 25.

August 28 have a dinner with your family ask everyone what kind of dreams they have in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Food

Serve Elvis’ favorites: fried chicken, BBQ pizza, Sloppy Joe, sweet potato pie, French fries, popcorn, pork rinds, sweet potato chips, sweet iced tea and his favorite peanut butter and banana sandwich.

Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich

Invitations

Invitations can be done on notebook paper or penmanship paper. The writing should be in perfect cursive on notebook paper and perfect printing on penmanship paper. Of course, invitations with school supplies, chalkboards, etc. will work well, too. Use school lingo in the invitations. For example, Class begins at 7:00 PM.

Decorations

Decorations will be pretty easy. Go to a dollar store, Walmart, or wherever you can find school supplies at a good price. Buy paper, pencils, pens, sharpeners, markers, crayons, notebooks, folders, etcetera. Set them around your house. Make centerpieces with them for the tables. If you have old school uniforms, put them up. Have a whiteboard or chalkboard on an easel welcoming everyone to your school. Put the name of  the school, (for example, Thompson Preparatory School) on the chalkboard.

Food

Prepare sack lunches or make what may be served in a school cafeteria line. For example, a sack lunch might include a sandwich, chips, an apple and a drink.

A school cafeteria line may have macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, meatloaf, pizza, French fries, salad, pop, water, candy bars, dessert……

Activities

 - Make up games according to the ages of the people present.
 - Make up a word find or word scramble.
 - Have a spelling test.
 - Put together a matching game.
The left column might have a definition or a question.
The right column could have the word or answer.
This will be good for history or science.
 - Have a math bee on paper. Make up some problems and the first person to answer them right wins a prize.
 - Divide everyone into two teams and play relay games you might play in gym class ( if space permits).

Prizes and favors can be school supplies you used as decorations.
