The organic arguments have been smashed!

Blog Post by Jessica Zirbes

In the past several months I have become quite the health nut, reading every health related article, book and magazine that I can get my hands on. Yes, I will admit that I have been a bit obsessed, but being healthy is a good thing, right? My husband has very patient with me, although annoyed from time to time. I love you Ryan Zirbes! Anyway, back to my point. As I have been reading and talking about health, as you can imagine there have been people who have not agreed with the organic movement. I would like to take a few minutes to smash the two biggest arguments that I have encountered.

“There is not a major difference between
conventionally grown and organically grown foods.”

Let’s start with tomatoes. On average a conventionally grown tomato is sprayed with up to seven kinds of pesticides. Then in most cases it’s picked too early because it must make a long journey across the world from its original location to your supermarket. Once it reaches Jewel it’s probably still green, so now it will be sprayed with argon gas (also used to euthanize dogs) to make it turn red prematurely. Now let’s talk about oranges. Yes, I agree that in most cases the conventionally grown oranges look more appealing than the organically grown oranges. The saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is definitely true in this case. Most organically grown oranges, even though they are much small have up to 30% more Vitamin C than the conventionally grown oranges. The reason  why conventionally grown oranges are about double the size are because farmers use a special type of fertilizer, which cause the oranges to intake more water, which dilutes the orange.  So you end up with a great big orange full or water, but little nutrients. What is more important to you what the orange looks like or what’s in it?

“I can’t afford to buy organic food.”

You can choose to pay now or pay later. At some point if your life the chemicals that you have put in your body will catch up with you. Many studies have examined the effects of pesticide exposure, associations have been found with: leukemia, lymphoma cancer, brain cancer, kidney cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, pancreas cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer and skin cancers. It is estimated that as many as 20,000 people in the US will develop cancer each year from the residue of pesticide on their food. What do I mean by “pay now or pay later?”  You can either invest your money now by buying organic food or pay the doctor later in medical bills, which I guarantee will cost you more. Personally, I invest in buying organic foods and products because I value my life (more than money, stuff and leisure) and plan on living at least until I’m 100 years old. What value do you place on your health?

Make the change

I challenge you to make a commitment to replace your conventionally grown foods with organically grown foods. In my opinion, the most practical way to go about it is by taking baby steps. For example, when you run out of apples, buy organic apples. My husband and I are not at a place financially to be able to go 100% organic, so every month we spend a certain amount on organic foods and products. However, we do have a goal in place to increase that amount as our financial situation improves.

The benefits of eating organic foods

1. Organics help you stay slim and prevent diabetes

2. Organics help you avoid scary hormones

3. Organics help you avoid pesticides and other chemicals

4. Organics help you prevent antibiotic resistance

5. Organics make your food taste better

6. Organics in season make your diet more diverse

7. Organics make your food more nutritious

8. Organics help you save the earth
