Easter Traditions

Easter time we attended the Easter Service at church as a family. It was important for us to worship the Lord together and to honor Him and thank Him as a family for the great sacrifice of His Son for our eternal life. Then my dad would hide chocolates in the garden for us to find. It was really a fun time of us all being together and laughing and hunting together, and then sharing our ‘spoils.’ We like to do something similar. I like to read the story of the Resurrection called ‘Benjamin’s Box’ by Melody Carlson to my children. We dress up in our best clothes for church and usually have a photo session in our living room before lunch. Then before we eat, we thank the Lord for His love and salvation towards us and for the privilege to know Him. We look for ways to be more like Him.

Grandma Lois always made a lamb-shaped cake from a mold for a centerpiece at Easter dinner. When she passed away, our mother-in-law, Denita, inherited the mold. She makes the lamb with white batter and frosts it with white frosting topped with coconut. She places the lamb on a bed of artificial grass. Every year the dinner is concluded with the slicing of the lamb cake and we all partake. The tradition serves as a reminder that Jesus was and is the spotless Lamb of God who came to take away the sin of the world.

Every Easter, my parents would bake a ham on a bone for a noon lunch with all the trimmings. In the afternoon, all of the relatives would go to my grandparents' home to spend time with them.

My Father always took us children to our grandparents' home almost every weekend. My grandparents loved to see their grandchildren and I remember the joy they would receive to see us. This was his way of showing us to honor them and how much he loved his parents and cared for them. I pray that parents would teach their children to honor their grandparents by going to visit them on a regular basis and to help them with any needs they may have.
