Discovering The One Who Fills All In All
…No matter how arrogant or spiritual the error sounds, here is the reality of God’s Word…Jesus is enough! He is our all in all whether we are married or single! The fact that God created marriage and esteemed it as a holy institution, is evident throughout Scripture. Yes, it was not good for Adam to be alone, but was that because God Himself was not enough to fulfill Adam’s needs? Certainly not! As the Bible explains, God created Eve because Adam needed a helper, a companion to do the work on earth god had called him to do. Yes, there were many blessings that came to both Adam and Eve through their companionship with each other, but their marriage was never to take the place of God. He was still God, and He was still meant to be their first and primary object of love and worship.
• Psalm 73:25 says, "Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You." • Psalm 16:11 says, “In Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore." • Psalm 107:9 says, “He satisfies the longing soul."
David the psalmist had plenty of female companionship in his life. But it is David’s intimate relationship with God that brings him the perfect satisfaction these verses portray.
Throughout the Bible Jesus Christ is shown as the perfect fulfillment of our heart; the sweetest satisfaction for our human soul. He is called the one who fills us all in all; not the one who fills us halfway so our spouse can fill us the rest of the way.
Marriage was not designed to make up for what God lacked. It was not that God was unable to meet the longings of Adam’s heart, so He had to create Eve. Rather, He created marriage to be a reflection of the perfect union and fellowship that we have with Him. The entire Bible is a love story-a romance between Jesus Christ and His bride. God is a God of romance. Our earthly marriages are meant to showcase the ultimate marriage that we are to share with Him-just as the Song of Solomon so beautifully portrays. But even if we never experience earthly marriage, we can be completely fulfilled by an intimate romance with our Beloved Prince, Jesus Christ, the Lover of our soul. He and He alone is the one who fills all in all.
In my book “Set Apart Feminity”, I gave a list of all the things the Bible says Jesus is to be to us. Here is a recap:
My Portion, My Maker, My Husband (Is. 54:5) My Well-Beloved (Song of Solomon 1:13) My Savior (2 Peter3:18) My Hope (1 Tim. 1:1) My Brother (Mark 3:35) My Helper (Hebrews 13:6) My Physician (Jer. 8:22) My Healer (Luke 9:11) My Refiner (Mal. 3:3) My Purifier (Mal. 3:3) My Lord, Master (John 13:13) My Servant (Luke 12:37) My Example (John 13:15) My Teacher (John 3:2) My Shepherd (Ps. 23:1) My Keeper (John 17:12) My Feeder (Ez. 34:23) My Leader (Is. 40:11) My Restorer (Ps. 23:3) My Resting Place (Jer. 50:6) My Meat (John 6:55) My Drink (John 6:55) My Passover (1 Cor. 5:7) My Peace (Eph. 2:14) My Wisdom (1 Cor. 1:30) My Righteousness (1 Cor. 1:30) My Sanctification (1 Cor. 1:30) My Redemption (1 Cor. 1:30) My All in All (Col. 3:11)
Wow. Talk about the ultimate Bridegroom! Such a Prince is more perfect than any fairy-tale that ever existed. And He invites us to have a daily romance with Him! He delights to become all of those things to us on a daily basis! And if we are in such intimate fellowship with our Lord that He fills us all in all and becomes everything in that list above, then we will not try to satisfy the longings of our heart some other way!
Let me point out here that the vast majority of us are supposed to be married. In saying that Christ wants to be our all in all and that we are not to look to marriage to meet needs only He can fill, I’m certainly not trying to downplay the sacredness or significance of getting married. But, as mentioned earlier, the principle of finding our fulfillment first and foremost in Christ is crucial, even for those of us who are called to be married one day.
